Penalties for Refusal to Pay Child Support
Interviewer: What are some of the penalties you may be subject to if you knowingly refuse to pay child support or spousal maintenance?
Adam: Actually, you could go to jail.
Interviewer: I didn’t know that. Does that apply for spousal maintenance as well?
Adam: Yes, it does because it’s court ordered. Technically, you’re in contempt for failing to pay, so the court could order, as with any other type of contempt, that you would be sent to prison. That usually takes some time, though. However, they could suspend your driver’s license and you’d lose all your driving privileges.
Interviewer: So, it’s pretty serious if you don’t pay on time and on a regular basis.
Adam: That’s right.
