How Child Support Is Determined
Interviewer: Let’s talk about child support. Does the amount of child support you have to pay depend on what percent of custody you have? For example, if you have the kids 3 days a week, do you have to pay less child support to your spouse, versus if you have them 1 day a week?
Adam: The biggest distinction you’re going to see change in the amount of support is if there is a shared parenting agreement. That’s where both parents share custody of the child every other week. In that case, you’re probably not going to see any kind of support order because they’re both equally sharing in the parenting. Then that’ll be the same thing with tax returns. Claiming the children will be on an every other year basis for the parents.
